Mansfield volleyball is good from the ground up. The junior Lady Tigers won the 3A-1 conference and district crowns this past weekend.
On Saturday, October 11 the young Tiger team made their way to Elkins for the District Tournament. As the number 1 seed via their conference round robin championship, Mansfield faced Lincoln in the semi-finals beating the Wolves 25-17 and 25-22. The Tigers would advance to play Elkins in the finals. After dropping the first set 21-25, Mansfield stayed tough minded and athletic to become the District Tournament Champions with consecutive set wins of 25-15 and 15-13.
After losing the first set of the finals, Mansfield Junior High head coach April Howell told the girls not to panic. It would be bonus volleyball to play two more sets.
“I told the girls all that meant was that we were playing three sets,” explained Howell. “They were fired up in the second set, winning 25-15. In the third set, we got a lead at 9-6 and maintained the lead to win 15-13! The girls hustled and played smart.” The coach continued, “In the last week of the season we have been focusing on ‘A.C.E.’, which stands for ‘Attitude, Communication, and Energy’. The girls definitely ‘aced’ in the district tournament!”
