A week ago news came down that Mansfield softball coach Savanna Jacobs was selected as an assistant coach for the 2017 Sophomore/Junior Classic showcase event later in June. This week, additional good news broke that she will be joined by one of her own Mansfield players.
Riley Shoell, a Mansfield sophomore from the 2017 school softball team, received word she was picked to participate at the elite softball tournament. Having been nominated among other Mansfield players, it was Shoell that stood out among a long list of nominees across the state to be invited.
Shoell was a utility player for the Tigers playing multiple positions throughout the season. She found time in the outfield, behind the plate, and in the infield when necessary. It was through those strategic defensive efforts as well as her timely offense that made her a solid selection to the Classic.
The honored sophomore batted .389 on offense. She was credited with a fielding percentage that ranked near the top of the Tiger team at .917.
The Sophomore/Junior Classic enlists coaches and players from across the state to a two day event designed to bring some of the state’s top young talent together in one place. Typically, the selected 10th and 11th grade players are divided among 8 teams. Coaches drill them with techniques and strategies for one day. The following day the 8 teams play in a round robin format in live action games.
In the past, play has been conducted on the campus of Hendrix College in Conway. This 2017 classic looks to follow that same scenario as detail are still coming in as of press time.
The program is sponsored by the Arkansas High School Fast Pitch Association. This will be the 16th time the event has gone off with Arkansas underclassmen. Jacobs was a player in the 2009 Classic when she too played for the Mansfield Lady Tigers.
